The One About Santa 2010

Monday, December 6th, 2010

“My mommy said if I sit on Santa and smile, I get a cookie.  My mommy said if I sit on Santa and smile, I get a cookie.  My mommy said if I sit on Santa and smile, I get a cookie.”

What must have been running through Latham’s mind as this shot was snapped of him and Kris Kringle at the mall this weekend.

And, how awesome is this picture of Reichen?  It only took me 4 years to get one where he wasn’t screaming while sitting on Santa.  It was totally worth the wait.  Totally.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thursday, November 25th, 2010

From our family to yours,

Happy Thanksgiving!

And if you’re looking for a super fun project to do with the kids today, you’ve got to try this Candy Corn Turkey.  Reichen and Latham loved making them!

Candy Corn Turkey

Ingredients:

1. Ritz Crackers

2.  Icing

3.  Candy Corn

4.  Caramel Squares

5.  Hershey Kiss

Directions:

1.  Take 1 Ritz Cracker and spread icing all over it.

2.  Place 1 Hershey Kiss in the middle of the cracker.  The Kiss makes the body of the turkey.

3.  Take 4 or 5 Candy Corns and place them around the top half of the cracker.  The Candy Corns make the feathers.

4.  Spread icing on one side of a Caramel Square and place it on the base of the undecorated side of the Ritz Cracker.  The Caramel Square holds the Ritz Cracker upright.

5.  Place a dab of icing on the end of 1 Candy Corn and attach it to the peak of the Hershey Kiss.  The Candy Corn makes the turkey’s beak.

Four Reichen

Happy Birthday to you my most extraordinary little boy

Four years ago today you brought me incredible joy.

I couldn’t wait to meet you when I realized I was pregnant

I counted down the days including every single second.

The day you were born you made me a mother

A gift so rare I will never receive it from another.

You’ve changed and you’ve grown so much these four years

You wiggle your eyebrows and try to do the same with your ears.

You now like to draw and we practice all your numbers

And you’re such a big boy you no longer need diapers.

You’re super well spoken and know all your colors

You love to play cars and even share them with others.

You can brush your own teeth and always ask me to read

And when you laugh really hard you gasp when you breathe.

You weigh a whopping 40 pounds and your favorite color is pink

And you giggle like crazy when you show me how you wink.

Everywhere we go, people say you look just like your daddy

And you think it’s really funny when you smack your own fanny.

I can’t believe, Reichen Micheal, that you’re four years old today

And your dad and I just want to wish you a very happy birthday.

Toddler Talk

Sunday, November 14th, 2010

Reichen:  “Don’t snap my balls, please.”

What my 3-year-old says to my mom every time she buckles him in his carseat.  Every.  Time.

Husbandism #28

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010

David:  “Whoever poops ‘em gets to flush ‘em.”

My husband’s words of wisdom to our boys after he heard them arguing over who got the privilege of flushing Reichen’s poop down the potty.

Toddler Talk

Sunday, October 24th, 2010

Reichen:  “You’re too small to be like me, Latham.”

Latham:  “I’m not small, RyRy.  I’m huge!”

Reichen:  “No.  You’re small, Latham.  But you do have a huge head.”

The car conversation I overheard between my two boys on the drive home tonight.

The One Where You Hit a Baseball

Monday, October 4th, 2010

When you made eye contact with that stranger, I couldn’t help but giggle.

You smiled really big before making your eyebrows jump and wiggle.

Neither she or I could believe it; It was the most hysterical thing.

You were just like a court jester who was performing for his king.

You do stuff all the time I had no idea you could do.

Like when you picked up a pencil and drew the number 2.

“It’s a 2,” you smiled when you finished your task.

And when I realized you were right, I just sat there and gasped.

And when you gazed at the moon and called its shape a crescent,

The word you used to describe it was better than any Christmas present.

But what really surprised me was the day you picked up a bat.

You hit the ball so far, I had to search to discover where it landed at.

You impressed us so much, your dad took a video with his phone.

We’re kind of nut jobs like that, who must document every milestone.

We’re having the best time, little dude, being your parents.

And we look forward to a lifetime of your super amazing moments.

For The Love of Lexy

Monday, September 27th, 2010

You have lots of little buddies but Lexy’s your best.

You talk about her all the time, to that I can attest.

Whenever you’re not with her, you always wonder what she’s up to.

Is she at preschool, or playing, or perhaps trying a new hairdo?

And when you two are together, you can’t wait to play chase.

All she has to do is ask, and you’re both off on a great race.

When we took you two to the circus, Lexy’s mother and I -

The pair of you chatted like crazy during the entire car ride.

You like her blond hair and her pretty eyes of blue.

And you do what she says, no matter what she asks of you.

You’re the very best of buddies and it’s so fun for me to see.

You’re two sweet peas in a pod, just you and Lexy.

The Boy Who Wears Bracelets

Sunday, September 19th, 2010

“Take that off,” she demanded when she realized what her toddler was wearing.

“You’re a boy! Boys do not wear bracelets.” And as she said it, she ripped off his pink plastic prize and flung it to the floor. And he started crying. Hard. But she didn’t care. She just rolled her eyes at her friend and continued her conversation about how the fence her next door neighbor is building is ruining her property value.

“Mommy,” Latham looked up at me and blinked, “why did that lady take his bracelet?”

“I’m not sure, buddy,” is all I felt comfortable saying, since we were standing right behind the woman and the son she just scolded.

David, Reichen, Latham, and I were at the Outdoor Movie and Fun Night the mom’s group I belong to organized. It was a cool summer evening and the boys (and by the boys, I mean Reichen, Latham, and David) were having a blast jumping in the bouncy house, playing toddler golf, and stuffing their faces with hot dogs, chips, and watermelon flavored snow cones.

It was getting dark, but before we spread out our blanket for the night’s feature flick, Toy Story II, Latham and Reichen wanted to play one more game. So we stood in line behind a little guy who couldn’t have been more than 2 ½ to play the Tootsie Roll game. And since his mom was no where in site, when it was his turn, I explained to all three little dudes how to play it.

“All you have to do,” I said, “is pick a lollipop.” “And then, you just have to tell me the color of your stick.” “If you have a green stick, you get to pick a prize from the green bowl. If you have a red stick, you get to pick a prize from the red bowl.”

I watched all three little guys gasp and giggle when they realized not only did they get to eat the lollipop, but they got to pick a prize, too.  They were psyched!

The bowls were full of all sorts of fun stuff such as bubbles, crayons, playing cards, and bracelets. And the little boys couldn’t wait to choose a lollipop and claim their reward. Reichen picked bubbles from the green bowl. And Latham and the other little guy choose pink bracelets from the red bowl.

“Look, mommy! I’m just like you,” Latham laughed when he held out his chubby little arm for my inspection.

“I know, baby,” I smiled. “You look just like mommy,” and I held out my wrist as well.

Latham loves bracelets.  And he has ever since he brought me a bangle from my jewelry box several months ago and asked if he could wear it.  And when 4 year old Lexy, one of his best buddies, offered him a bunch of rubber band bracelets, he wore all of them from his wrist to his elbow for two weeks.  He never took them off.  Ever.  And we let him.

“Why,” I replied, when David wondered one time why Latham was wearing bracelets. “He’s only 2 years old.”  “He doesn’t know what boys should wear and what girls should wear.” ”He just likes to wear them.”  ”And who cares, anyhow,” I laughed, “if wearing bracelets makes him happy, who are we to take that away.”  And David agreed.

And that’s the last conversation David and I have ever had about it.  My baby will figure out soon enough that boys don’t really wear bracelets.  So until then, he can wear them all he wants.  And when he asks why another mommy ripped one off his friend’s wrist, I’ll just shrug and say, “I don’t know, buddy.”

Because I don’t.

Toddler Talk

Thursday, September 16th, 2010

Reichen: “Daddy, I need to poop.  Hey, where is the potty seat?”

David:  “Your party seat?”

Reichen:  “No, Daddy.  POTTY seat!  But it’s like a party when I poop.  Shut the door, please.”

Toddler Talk

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

Reichen:  “It’s just some old lady.”

What my 3 year old blurted as my mother-in-law opened the door to my realtor who stopped by to drop off some paperwork.  Yes, she heard it.  And no, I wasn’t there.  Thank goodness.

The One About a Whiner and a Winner

Friday, September 10th, 2010

Have I Told You:

Reichen chipped my front tooth while trying kiss me.

Reichen and Latham have a serious case of diarrhea.  And I’ve been collecting stool samples for tests.  And changing diapers and underwear every 30 seconds.  And running never ending loads of laundry.  And incessantly disinfecting our home.

I totally flaked on a friend’s play date.  I thought the boys and I were supposed to be there Thursday at 11:00am, not Wednesday at 11:00am.  And to make matters worse, I didn’t even realize my mistake until yesterday.

We have not sold our home even though:

  • it’s been on the market 6 months.
  • we’ve lowered the asking price $40,000.
  • we’ve painted the entire interior.
  • we’ve replaced our awesome light fixtures with boring ones.
  • we’ve put in new landscaping.

How impossible it is to keep a house in ‘show’ condition while raising 2 toddlers.

David drives 6 hours a day, nearly every day, for work while we wait to sell our home.

This entire post deleted itself when I pushed the button to publish it.

Okay.  Okay.  Okay.  This concludes the whining portion of this post.  Here’s the part where I tell you who won The Great Give Away.  Shall We?  Let’s.

Andrea, you’re the winner!  I’ll be e-mailing you shortly with more information,  In the meantime, here’s how Andrea wants to customize her new Sigg Water Bottle from Cafe Press.

“I would definitely put a picture of my family on it so that no matter where I am or no matter where they are, I can always “see” them, especially since my oldest started Kindergarten.”

Thanks so much to everyone who entered!

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have more stool samples to collect.  Lots more.  Have I told you the doctor wants 7 vials full of fecal.

Help. Me.

Husbandism #24

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

David:  “Since you’re always wondering what the boys and I do when you’re running errands, I recorded it.”

p.s.  Make sure you don’t miss The Great Giveaway.  You have until Thursday, September 9th at noon to enter.  Good Luck!

Can You Say Awkward? I Knew You Could.

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

Okay.  I’ve got an awesome idea.  Let’s all dress in denim, pile on top of each other, and smile really cheesy for our family photo.  It’ll be perfect framed over our fireplace, don’t you think?  Not to mention, it’ll make the most amazing Christmas card.  All our friends and family will love it.*

Or if that looks a little weird, maybe we should all wear white tops, climb a tree, and straddle each other.  Yup, that’s what we should do.  And to make the pose perfect, I totally think we should all put our hands on our knees and say ‘family’ when the photographer tells us it’s time to smile.*

Or maybe, we should just dress the way we always dress, and do the things we always do, while the most talented photography team in Missouri and Kansas captures us just being us.

Josh and Jenny of Solar Photographers are an incredibly brilliant husband and wife duo who’ve been snapping photos of our family since Reichen was 7 weeks old.

Since then, Josh and Jenny have been there for all our most important moments, including both boys’  first steps, my big belly during my 2nd pregnancy; they even captured this sweet shot of my 2nd son just days after he was born.

I tell you all this because I’m super psyched about our latest session with Solar Photographers.  I love that they just let us do what we do while they capture it all.  There’s no posing, no placing hands on knees, and the best part:  they never make us shout ‘cheese’ after the count of three.

If you want to see more from our session, Josh and Jenny have our highlights and so many other incredible photo shoots posted on their awesome blog.  Enjoy!

Toddler Talk

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

Reichen:   “Mommy?”

Me:   “Yes, baby?”

Reichen:  “When is Daddy coming home?”

Me:  “I don’t know.  After work, like usual, I guess.  Why?”

Reichen:  “Because you are going to be in so much trouble when I tell Daddy you made me sit in time out.”

What my 3 year old said after a stint in time out for biting his brother.
