30 for 30 Challenge – Day 14

Monday, February 14th, 2011

When David and I were invited to a fundraiser for Children’s Mercy Hospital a few weeks ago, we jumped at the chance to attend the event.  We felt honored to support the state of the art Kansas City medical facility since just months ago, the doctors and nurses who work there helped us through one of the most difficult times in our lives.

You may remember earlier this year, our 2-year-old son, Latham suffered from severe diarrhea which caused him to rapidly lose more than 10 pounds – a third of his total body weight.  We were terrified when our doctor told us we had to take our baby to Children’s Mercy for tests which included cystic fibrosis and celiac disease.  (If you want to learn more about Latham’s chronic condition, you can click here , here, here, and here.)  But Children’s Mercy Hospital gave us the answers we needed; the answers no one else could; the answers which ultimately helped heal our son.  And the doctors and nurses interacted with us in the most caring, thoughtful and considerate way possible which made the ordeal we were going through manageable.

Our son is now healthy.  But so many other children are not.  And it’s through fundraisers, such as the one we attended Saturday night, that allows children all over the Midwest to receive the healthcare they so desperately need, even if they can’t afford it.

So I hope you’ll forgive me when I tell you that I broke Kendi’s 30 for 30 Remix Challenge rules for the fundraising gala.  I confess I popped on my party dress – which was not in my 30 for 30 wardrobe – and even bought a new pair of earrings for the festivities.  David and I had a great time and I am happy to report the event raised well over a million dollars.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

BCBG dress, Dillards earrings, Dillards bracelet, Kenneth Cole ring, Target pantyhose, DSW shoes, OPI nail polish, David flowers, Jill the best hairdresser and friend in the world who did my gorgeous hair, Christiane did my beautiful makeup.

30 for 30 Challenge – Day 6

Sunday, February 6th, 2011

The boys were out shoveling snow with their dad and no matter what I did or what I said, they kept popping into the shot and making me laugh.  So I thought, if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.

A Potty Training Tale

Wednesday, January 12th, 2011

“I have to go potty,” you announce the other day

And as you run for the restroom, I think, ‘there’s no way.’

We’ve never practiced on the potty- not one little bit

But since you’re so convinced, I decide to let you try it.

And so you grunt, and you push, and you wrinkle your face

You squeeze, and you breathe, and you sit right in place.

And when it finally happens, neither of us can believe it

And then we laugh really loud until our sides almost split.

He gives you a high five when we run and tell your brother

He says he’s so proud of you – way more than any other.

But no one could ever be more proud of you than me

You’re my 2 year  boy who taught himself how to potty.

Toddler Talk

Sunday, January 9th, 2011

Latham:  “Whoa, Mommy!   It stinks in here!”

Me:   “Yeah, buddy.  You tooted a smelly one.”

Latham:  “No, I didn’t toot.  Daddy did!”

I totally would have bought the tooting tale my two year old toddler told me except for the one little hole in his story - Daddy was at work.

The First Day of Preschool

Thursday, January 6th, 2011

It’s your first day of school and you’re so excited to get there.

You jump into your jeans and try to comb your own hair.

Blueberry yogurt is for breakfast, but you barely take a bite.

And forget about the toast - you won’t eat it without a fight.

So you hop in the car followed by your dad, brother, and me.

It’s a really special day and we want to celebrate as a family.

The new friends you’re about to make is what we discuss during the drive.

And you say you’re going to wear your backpack as soon as we arrive.

Ms. Joy is your teacher and she welcomes you with a smile.

She says, ”This is your cubby – it’s the one right here on the aisle.”

You tell her you’re excited to start preschool today.

And two seconds later, you dismiss us with a quick wave.

“See you in a couple hours,” I say as I give you a big hug.

And as you give me a kiss Ms. Joy says, ”Please, sit on the rug.”

And suddenly, the door closes and you’re off on a new adventure.

I’m so proud of you Reichen, it’s a memory I’ll always treasure.

A Picture Perfect Day

Wednesday, December 22nd, 2010

Josh and Jenny, the dynamic duo from Solar Photographers, have done it again.  I just love how the talented and charismatic couple captures my 3 stinky boys and me in such a fun way no other photographer can.  Here’s a peek at a few of my favorites from our photo shoot a couple weeks ago.  Enjoy!

The One About Santa 2010

Monday, December 6th, 2010

“My mommy said if I sit on Santa and smile, I get a cookie.  My mommy said if I sit on Santa and smile, I get a cookie.  My mommy said if I sit on Santa and smile, I get a cookie.”

What must have been running through Latham’s mind as this shot was snapped of him and Kris Kringle at the mall this weekend.

And, how awesome is this picture of Reichen?  It only took me 4 years to get one where he wasn’t screaming while sitting on Santa.  It was totally worth the wait.  Totally.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thursday, November 25th, 2010

From our family to yours,

Happy Thanksgiving!

And if you’re looking for a super fun project to do with the kids today, you’ve got to try this Candy Corn Turkey.  Reichen and Latham loved making them!

Candy Corn Turkey

Ingredients:

1. Ritz Crackers

2.  Icing

3.  Candy Corn

4.  Caramel Squares

5.  Hershey Kiss

Directions:

1.  Take 1 Ritz Cracker and spread icing all over it.

2.  Place 1 Hershey Kiss in the middle of the cracker.  The Kiss makes the body of the turkey.

3.  Take 4 or 5 Candy Corns and place them around the top half of the cracker.  The Candy Corns make the feathers.

4.  Spread icing on one side of a Caramel Square and place it on the base of the undecorated side of the Ritz Cracker.  The Caramel Square holds the Ritz Cracker upright.

5.  Place a dab of icing on the end of 1 Candy Corn and attach it to the peak of the Hershey Kiss.  The Candy Corn makes the turkey’s beak.

Husbandism #29

Monday, November 22nd, 2010

David:  “He wanted his green car but I couldn’t find it, so I tooted with my armpit a couple times, and he was good.

The quality entertainment my husband performed for our 2-year-old to get his mind off his missing match box car.

It’s Like I Can Breathe Again. And I Didn’t Know I Was Holding My Breath.

Monday, November 15th, 2010

His lips are moving, but I can’t hear him.  The second the specialist says Latham is healthy, my head floods with water.  And the waves crashing in my mind make it impossible for me to listen to what the pediatric gastroenterologist is saying.

So I squint.  And try to read his lips.  But I can’t.

I glance at David and hope he’s hearing, but when I ask him later to repeat what the doctor said, he can’t.

So we try to put together our puzzle starting with the boarder and working our way in, and yet, we’re missing pieces – big pieces – and we don’t have the box to guide us.

When we get home, I call the Children’s Hospital and leave a message for the doctor.  When he returns it, he says he’s not surprised when I tell him I couldn’t really hear what he was saying.  He says it happens all the time when he delivers both really good and really bad news.  And he couldn’t be more thrilled, he said, to give us the really good kind.  Again.

He says Latham is healthy.  He does not have Cystic Fibrosis.  He does not have Celiac Disease.  He does not have Irritable Bowl Syndrome, food allergies, Leukemia, or any of the other awful diseases or conditions our toddler has been tested for.  What he does have:  Toddler’s Diarrhea, a condition that usually occurs in children between the ages of 6 months and 3 years, and causes loose, watery stools and severe weight loss.   Although Latham does have chronic diarrhea, the doctor went on to say, children with toddler’s diarrhea do have a normal appetite and grow and develop normally.

Latham has suffered on and off with chronic diarrhea and severe weight loss for the past 8 months and we’ve been relentlessly searching for answers to his health problems for just as long.  It has been a long and scary road for our family and we are extreemly relieved to finally have an answer to the problem that’s been plaguing him.

It’s like I can breathe again.  And I didn’t realize I had been holding my breath.

I also want to thank all of you for sharing in this journey with us.  We appreciate your supportive comments, thoughts, and prayers, more than you could ever know.  Thank you.

Husbandism #28

David:  “Whoever poops ‘em gets to flush ‘em.”

My husband’s words of wisdom to our boys after he heard them arguing over who got the privilege of flushing Reichen’s poop down the potty.

Toddler Talk

Sunday, October 24th, 2010

Reichen:  “You’re too small to be like me, Latham.”

Latham:  “I’m not small, RyRy.  I’m huge!”

Reichen:  “No.  You’re small, Latham.  But you do have a huge head.”

The car conversation I overheard between my two boys on the drive home tonight.

Toddler Talk

Monday, October 11th, 2010

David:  “What are you doing, buddy?”

Latham:  “I’m taking a nap.”

David:  “You don’t look like you’re taking a nap.”

Latham:  “But, I am.”

The conversation between my husband and my 2-year-old when David went to wake him from his afternoon nap and discovered our little dude in disguise.
